What's Ceriated Tungsten Electrode?

1.What's Ceriated Tungsten Electrode?
Ceriated tungsten electrode is one of the most widely used tungsten electrode types, manufactured by uniformly doping tungsten with cerium oxide (CeO₂). Its standard grade is WCe20 (WC20), one of the most common rare-earth tungsten electrode grades specified in ISO 6848.

The addition of CeO₂ significantly lowers the electron work function and improves electron emission capability and arc-starting performance. As a result, ceriated tungsten electrode delivers excellent arc stability under low-current and medium-low-current welding conditions. Featuring easy arc starting, stable arc performance, and long service life, ceriated tungsten electrode is widely used for TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding and plasma welding of carbon steel, stainless steel, nickel alloys, titanium alloys, copper alloys, and other materials.

2.Advantages of CTIA's Ceriated Tungsten Electrode
(1) Excellent Arc-Starting Performance: A lower electron work function than pure tungsten electrode enables easier arc ignition, especially in low-current applications such as thin-sheet and precision welding.
(2) Stable Arc Performance: Provides a concentrated and stable arc, producing uniform and high-quality weld beads.
(3) Ideal for Low-Current Applications: Performs exceptionally well in low-current and pulsed welding conditions, allowing precise control of heat input.
(4) Non-Radioactive Material: Contains no radioactive additives such as thorium oxide, meeting modern environmental and workplace safety requirements.
(5) Low Electrode Consumption: Offers good burn-off resistance within the recommended current range, helping extend service life.

Compared with pure tungsten electrode, ceriated tungsten electrode provides easier arc ignition and better stability during low-current welding. Compared with thoriated tungsten electrode, it contains no radioactive elements and is particularly suitable for precision welding and electronics manufacturing applications.

3.Applications of CTIA's Ceriated Tungsten Electrode
(1) DC (Direct Current) TIG welding of stainless steel, carbon steel, and thin-sheet materials.
(2) Precision welding of electronic components, instruments, and miniature parts.
(3) Automated welding, orbital welding, and robotic welding systems.
(4) Plasma welding, plasma spraying, and low-current plasma cutting equipment.
(5) Aerospace, medical device, semiconductor equipment, and new energy manufacturing industries.

5.How to Select CTIA's Ceriated Tungsten Electrode
When choosing ceriated tungsten electrodes, prioritize the grey-tipped, international standard WC20 grade. Due to its excellent low-current arc-starting characteristics, WC20 is ideal for low-current DC welding under 50A, orbital pipe precision micro-welding, and non-welding discharge applications such as high-voltage corona static elimination. Additionally, in regions with strict radiation regulations, it serves as an eco-friendly alternative to radioactive thoriated tungsten electrodes (WT20).

6.Can Ceriated Tungsten Electrode Replace Thoriated Tungsten Electrode?
Yes. For low-to-medium current DC welding, ceriated tungsten electrodes are a viable substitute for thoriated tungsten electrodes. As a non-radioactive alternative, they are widely used in electronics, medical devices, and precision machining.
