What's Thoriated Tungsten Electrode?

1.What's Thoriated Tungsten Electrode?
Thoriated tungsten electrode is a tungsten electrode manufactured by uniformly doping tungsten with thorium oxide (ThO₂). The addition of ThO₂ lowers the electron work function and improves electron emission capability, arc-starting performance, and arc stability, making thoriated tungsten electrode particularly suitable for DC (Direct Current) welding applications. It is widely used for TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding and plasma welding of carbon steel, stainless steel, nickel alloys, titanium alloys, copper alloys, and other materials. The most common international grades are WTh10 (WT10) and WTh20 (WT20).

2.Advantages of CTIA's Thoriated Tungsten Electrode
(1) Excellent arc-starting performance: strong electron emission capability and lower arc-starting voltage enable easier arc ignition.
(2) Superior arc stability: provides a concentrated and stable arc during welding, helping improve weld quality.
(3) High current-carrying capacity: suitable for medium- and high-current welding applications as well as continuous operation.
(4) Excellent tip shape retention: the sharpened tip resists deformation and maintains its geometry over extended periods.
(5) Long service life: low burn-off rate makes thoriated tungsten electrode suitable for automated and high-volume welding production.

Compared with pure tungsten electrode, thoriated tungsten electrode offers better arc-starting characteristics and superior stability in DC welding. Compared with zirconiated tungsten electrode, it is more suitable for DC welding.

3.Applications of CTIA's Thoriated Tungsten Electrode
(1) DC TIG welding of carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy steel: suitable for welding pipelines, pressure vessels, and structural components.
(2) High-quality welding of nickel alloys, titanium alloys, and copper alloys: ideal for applications requiring excellent arc stability and weld appearance.
(3) Automated welding, robotic welding, and orbital welding systems: suitable for medium- and high-current continuous welding operations.
(4) Plasma welding and plasma cutting equipment: used as a stable electron emission source.

4.Grades of CTIA's Thoriated Tungsten Electrode

5. Are Thoriated Tungsten Electrodes Radioactive?
Yes. Thoriated tungsten electrodes contain thorium oxide (ThO₂), which is a low-level radioactive material. While the risk is minimal under normal use, grinding can generate thorium-bearing dust; therefore, proper ventilation, personal protective equipment, and dust collection measures must be implemented. Currently, some industries are gradually replacing them with lanthanated or ceriated tungsten electrodes as alternatives.

6.Specifications of CTIA's Thoriated Tungsten Electrode
(1) Diameter: 0.5 mm–10.0 mm, customizable
(2) Length: 150 mm or 175 mm, customizable
(3) Surface Finish: Ground finish
(4) Packaging: 10 pcs/box, moisture-resistant and oxidation-resistant packaging
