What's Composite Tungsten Electrode?

Composite tungsten electrode refers to a high-performance tungsten electrode prepared by introducing multiple composite components into the tungsten matrix, which is known as multi-component composite rare earth tungsten electrode. Composite tungsten electrode also refers to a structurally composite tungsten electrode, including a gold-plated or nickel-plated tungsten electrode with a composite coating, as well as a special structural electrode such as a tungsten-graphite or tungsten-ceramic composite.

Multi-component composite rare earth tungsten electrode is manufactured by adding two or more active oxides (such as cerium oxide CeO₂, lanthanum oxide La₂O₃, yttrium oxide Y₂O₃, zirconium oxide ZrO₂, etc.) into a tungsten matrix. Its core design concept is to enhance electron emission capability and high-temperature stability through synergistic rare-earth effects, significantly improving arc performance and service life.

Compared with traditional single-doped tungsten electrodes such as ceriated, lanthanated, or thoriated tungsten electrodes, composite tungsten electrode adopts a more complex multi-component system in structure. The addition ratio of rare earth oxides is generally controlled between 1% and 4%. Prepared through processes including high-energy powder blending, isostatic pressing, high-temperature sintering, and precision machining, the oxide particles are uniformly distributed within the tungsten matrix to form a stable grain-strengthening structure. This structure effectively suppresses abnormal grain growth and improves resistance to both thermal shock and ablation.

Composite tungsten electrode has a lower electron work function, enabling stable arc ignition at lower starting voltage. It also provides higher arc concentration and more precise heat input control. Its arc stability is superior to single rare-earth tungsten electrodes and performs well under both DC (Direct Current) and AC (Alternating Current) welding conditions. It is especially suitable for high-precision TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding, plasma arc welding, and automated welding systems.

Composite tungsten electrode is widely used in welding demanding materials such as stainless steel, titanium alloy, nickel-based alloy, and superalloy, particularly in the fields of aerospace, semiconductor equipment manufacturing, vacuum electronic devices, and precision machining. Its comprehensive performance advantages are reflected in an approximately 20% to 40% improvement in arc ignition stability, a significantly reduced electrode erosion rate, and a service life extension of over 30% compared with traditional pure tungsten electrodes under identical working conditions.
