What's Yttriated Tungsten Electrode?
1.What's Yttriated Tungsten Electrode?
Yttriated tungsten electrode (WY) is a rare-earth-modified tungsten electrode manufactured from high-purity tungsten with the uniform addition of yttrium oxide (Y₂O₃) through powder metallurgy technology. The most common grade is WY20, which is typically identified by a blue color code.
During TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding and PAW (Plasma Arc Welding), yttriated tungsten electrode provides stable electron emission and a high-energy-density arc, making it suitable for high-precision welding applications.

2.Advantages of CTIA's Yttriated Tungsten Electrode
(1) Excellent arc-starting performance, stable arc ignition under low current conditions
(2) Strong arc concentration, high energy density, precise heat input control
(3) Good arc stability, suitable for continuous welding and automated welding systems
(4) Strong high-temperature recrystallization resistance, extending service life
(5) Strong contamination resistance, reducing the risk of weld inclusions
(6) Suitable for medium and high current TIG welding
Through yttrium oxide modification, yttriated tungsten electrode achieves grain boundary strengthening and enhanced electron emission capability. Even under high-temperature and high-current-density conditions, it maintains stable arc output. Compared with pure tungsten electrode, yttriated tungsten electrode offers significantly improved arc-starting performance and longer service life, making it an important electrode for advanced TIG welding applications.

4.Applications of CTIA's Yttriated Tungsten Electrode
Yttriated tungsten electrode is widely used for: (1) precision welding of aerospace structural components; (2) joining and fabrication of high-strength alloys for defense applications; (3) precision welding of titanium and refractory metals; (4) automated robotic welding systems.
5.What Is the Recommended Current Range for Yttriated Tungsten Electrode?
Electrode diameters of 1–3 mm are generally suitable for welding currents of 10–150 A. Electrode diameters of 4–6 mm are generally suitable for welding currents of 150–250 A. For high-current welding, larger electrode diameters should be selected. Proper control of arc voltage and dwell time is recommended to prevent tip overheating, spatter generation, or electrode burn-off.
