What's Tungsten Heating Element?

Tungsten heating element, also known as tungsten heater, is a resistance-based high-temperature heating component that uses high-purity tungsten wire or stranded tungsten wire as the heating source.

The working principle of tungsten heating element is based on Joule heating. When electric current passes through tungsten material, electrical energy is directly converted into thermal energy, enabling stable heating in vacuum or inert atmospheres.

The core performance of tungsten heating element originates from tungsten itself. With a melting point of approximately 3422°C, tungsten maintains high creep resistance and structural stability above 2000°C, enabling continuous operation under extreme thermal conditions. The tungsten wire typically has a purity of at least 99.95%. Some tungsten heaters use potassium-doped tungsten wire to improve recrystallization temperature and high-temperature deformation resistance.

The electrothermal performance is closely related to wire diameter. The diameter of tungsten wire is 0.2~0.8 mm. Different diameters correspond to different power and thermal field requirements. Tungsten has a resistivity of about 5.3 × 10⁻⁸ Ω·m at room temperature. Resistance increases with temperature, providing positive temperature coefficient behavior that improves operational stability.

Tungsten heating elements perform stably under vacuum conditions (10⁻³–10⁻⁶ Pa) or inert atmospheres (Ar, N₂). Working temperature typically ranges from 1800°C to 2800°C, with short-term operation up to around 3000°C. Low-oxygen environments reduce oxidation loss and extend service life.

As a core heating component in high-temperature thermal systems, tungsten heating element provides stable thermal output under high-purity and high-load conditions. It features fast heating response and low thermal inertia, supporting vacuum coating, electron beam evaporation, semiconductor heat treatment, and photovoltaic material processing.

Structural forms include straight wire, helical, coiled, hump-shaped, and basket types. Multi-strand designs improve mechanical strength and thermal uniformity. Winding method, pitch, and effective heating length directly affect thermal field distribution.
